"No matter your situation, you have a choice. I chose joy."
Roxane Battle was on television for much of her adult life. As a news reporter and anchor, she traveled the world and met notable people from Jay Leno to Mariah Carey to Prince. But shortly after landing her dream job in her hometown of Minneapolis, Roxane’s marriage fell apart. Every day was a battle to keep it together on camera while piecing her life back together at home as the single mom of eleven-month-old Jarod. At one point, broke and alone, dinner was a single chicken McNugget.
With wit, dignity, and gripping detail, Roxane shares her story of intentionally looking for joy during this challenging chapter of her life. Her faith was the guiding force as she searched for moments of gratitude and found a lifetime of grace. She also includes secrets to spiritual, professional, and personal wholeness for today’s woman, with chapters on authenticity, service, generosity, gratitude, self-care, yielding, forgiveness, and more.

So how’s it coming? The diet? The work out routine? The new project? If you’re like a lot of us, by now those well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions have started to wane a bit. According to recent research, by the time February rolls around, more than a third of us have broken those promises we made […]
You didn’t win the Powerball either huh? Sorry about that. I spent ten bucks on five tickets, just because. I guess I’m one of those people who subscribe to the ‘entertainment value’ theory, you know, being a part of something BIG, part of a national dialogue. If anything, a two dollar ticket holds FOMO –fear […]
What’s it like to be a nobody? After I left my job as a television news anchor I found out. I had no place to go and nothing to do. I had traded in business suits for sweat pants and morning editorial meetings for lattes at Starbucks. There I would sit, morning after morning broken […]
Not so long ago, I discovered buried in the bottom of a desk drawer, an essay I’d written while taking Lamaze classes. I wrote about my fears, my anxieties and ultimately my joy about becoming a new mom. My son is now 22, and that journal entry became a chapter in my first book. Pockets […]
Transforming pain into power is possible. In ‘Pockets of Joy,’ Roxane shows us how to tap into our unlimited potential and how to keep our spirit rising!
—Tavis SmileyTalk Show Host
Pockets of Joy briefly recounts her divorce, her departure from KARE11, focusing largely on the next chapter in her life as a single mom. Rather than belaboring her heartache, Battle emphasizes the lessons she learned in unexpected venues such as the bleachers on which she watched her son play basketball. A deeply spiritual person, Battle counts her belief that things would and could get better among the reasons she was able to move on.
—Caryn SullivanAward-winning columnist, author of Bitter or Better
Pockets of Joy is candid, beautifully written and easy to read. It is Roxane’s story of finding those pockets of joy during an extremely difficult season in her life.
